MASSACHUSETTS MASTER ELECTRICIAN SCOPE OF WORK COVERED: Master Electrician/Contractor is a person, firm, or corporation having a regular place of business who, by the employment of journeymen or apprentices, performs the work of installing, repairing or maintaining wires, conduits, apparatus, devices, fixtures or other appliances used for light, heat, power, fire warning or security system purposes; provided, however, that no journeyman electrician so employed shall have more than one apprentice under his supervision; and provided, further, that not more than one such apprentice shall be employed for each journeyman electrician purposes. The Master may also do electrical work himself. PRE-APPROVAL: It is necessary to gain approval to take the exam by submitting an application documenting experience and education. BUSINESS AND LAW: To obtain a Master license it is necessary to take a Business and Law Exam and a trade exam. Specific details about this exam are listed under the title, Massachusetts Business and Law. Simply select that title from the list of exams for this State. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Applicants must have at least one-year active work as a licensed Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician and have completed a Board Approved, 150-hour Master’s Course at a college or trade school. Additional requirements apply to out-of-state candidates. FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS: There are no state mandated minimum financial requirements for this license. EXAM DETAILS:A company called PSI gives the exams. It is a two-part, open-book exam with a preset time limit. Part I of the exam is the trade exam. It has 80 questions and a 4-hour time limit. Part II of the exam is the Business and Law Exam, it is completely separate from the trade exam and specific details about that exam can be found under that listing. A score of at least 70% is required to pass the exam. The cost of the trade exam is $80. EXAM CONTENT: Part I Trade Exam: State Specific Electrical Requirements General Knowledge Services Grounding and Bonding Wiring Methods and Devices Motors Transformers Low-Voltage Distribution Special Occupancies and Equipment Overcurrent Protection Lighting Alarm Systems BOND / INSURANCE: Liability Insurance is required of Master’s who have established a Limited Liability Corporation or Limited Liability Partnership. The minimum amount required is $200,000. LICENSING FEE: In addition to the exam fees, there is a PSI application-processing fee of $75 and a Massachusetts application-processing fee of $57. The actual license fee is a separate cost of $135. Licenses are renewed every three years. A total of 21 hours of Continuing Education is required to renew a license. PROCESSING TIME: The processing time for the initial application is approximately two weeks. RECIPROCITY: Massachusetts has a reciprocity agreement for this license with Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont for the Master license. ***IMPORTANT REFERENCE MATERIAL INFORMATION*** All of the books listed under, Reference Materials, on this page, are used to prepare for the exam.
