Requirements:

The South Carolina Commercial Business and Law exam as well as the trade exams is required to be passed to obtain your contractors license.

The first step in the licensing process is to pass the exams.

Applicants will then submit an application to the state licensing board with documentation of experience, financial information and passing test scores.

All Commercial and Mechanical Contractors except Fire Alarm and Burglar Alarm Contractors are required by the state to pass this exam in addition to their trade exam in order to obtain a license.

Scope of Work:

The South Carolina Commercail Business Law license cannot stand-alone; it must be combined with a commercial contractor's license of some type.

Individuals who are currently licensed as Residential Contractors in the state of South Carolina, and passed the Residential Business and Law exam, who are now applying for a Commercial Building License are EXEMPT from taking the Commercial Business and Law exam.

Applications:
  • The first step in the licensing process is to pass the exams.
  • A completed application will then be submitted to the state licensing board with documentation of your experience, financial information and your passing test scores.

  • The licensing fee for all commercial licenses is $350.
Reciprocity:

South Carolina currently has a no reciprocity agreements for this license.

Continuing 
Education:

South Carolina does not currently have any Continuing Education requirements for this license, at this time.

Exam:
  • The South Carolina Commercial Business and Law exam is administered by PSI.
  • The fee for the exam is $75 and in order to pass you must answer 35 correctly.
  • The Commercial Business and Law exam is an open-book exam with 50 questions to complete in 3 hours.
  • The Business Law exam may be taken as many times as required in a 12-month period.
  • Topics on the exam include business management; estimating and bidding; contracts and agreements; project management; insurance and bonding; safety record-keeping and reporting; labor laws and employment regulations; financial management; tax laws; liens; environmental laws and regulations
