South Carolina Structural Framing
 
Requirements:

Please note that the South Carolina Business and Law exam as well as the South Carolina Structural Framing exam is required to be passed to obtain your contractors license.

Financial requirements:

All licenses that fall under the category of General Contractor are divided in five financial categories based on net worth:

  • Group 1 – Allows for jobs of $30,000 or less, applicants must submit a self-prepared financial statement showing a net worth of at least $6,000.
  • Group 2 – Allows for jobs of $100,000 or less, applicants must submit a self-prepared financial statement showing a net worth of at least $20,000.
  • Group 3 – Allows for jobs of $350,000 or less, applicants must submit a financial statement that has been compiled and reviewed by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $70,000.
  • Group 4 – Allows for jobs of $750,000 or less, applicants must submit a financial statement that has been compiled and reviewed by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $150,000.
  • Group 5 – There are no financial limits on the size of job allowed, applicants must submit an audited financial statement that has been prepared by a CPA showing a net worth of at least $250,000.

    Experience required:

  • Within the past five years, contractor must show two years of actual work experience as a full-time employee in the desired classification. Only commercial experience is accepted.
Scope of Work:

The South Carolina Structural Framing license covers the installation, repair, or alteration of metal or composite structural members for buildings or structures, including riveting, welding, and rigging. This license also includes work under the Structural Shapes License.

Applications:

 

 

  • The first step in the licensing process is to pass the exams.
  • A completed application will then be submitted to the state licensing board with documentation of your experience, financial information and your passing test scores.

  • The licensing fee for all commercial licenses is $350.

     

     

  • Reciprocity:

    South Carolina currently has a reciprocity agreement with Utah for this license.

    Continuing 
    Education:

    There are currently no continuing education requirements for this license.

    Exam:
    • The South Carolina Structural Framing exam is administered by PSI.
    • The fee for the exam is $60 and In order to pass you must answer 35 questions correctly.
    • The Structural Framing exam is an open-book exam with 50 questions to complete in 2 hours.
    • The trade exam may only be taken twice in a 12-month period, and thereafter only once in six months.

      Topics on the exam include safety; welding; structural steel-bolting; metal-joists; rigging; structural steel.
