TEXAS MAINTENANCE ELECTRICIAN


There are no state minimum financial requirements at this time.


Applicants with any criminal offense conviction (felony or misdemeanor) must complete a criminal history questionnaire.


Applicants must obtain pre-approval from the state licensing board before testing.


QUALIFICATIONS: 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician or a maintenance electrician;
Passing score on the maintenance electrician examination.


SCOPE OF WORK: Maintenance Electricians work under the general supervision of a Master Electrician, on behalf of an electrical contractor, to replace or repair existing electrical appurtenances, apparatus, equipment, machinery or controls used in connection with the use of electrical energy in, on, outside or attached to a building, residence, structure, property or premises.


All replacements or repairs must be of the same rating and type as the existing installation.


Electrical maintenance work does not include the installation of any new electrical appurtenances, apparatus, equipment, machinery or controls beyond the scope of any existing electrical installation.


EXAM DETAILS: As of September 1, 2009 the test will be administered by PSI. It is an open-book timed test with 60 questions and a 2-hour time limit. A score of at least 75% is required to pass the exam. The exam fee is $63.


Topics covered on the exam are Electrical Services, Service Equipment, Separately Derived Systems, Definitions, Calculations, Theory and Plans, Electrical Feeders, Branch Circuits, Calculations and Conductors, Electrical Wiring Methods, and Electrical Materials, Electrical Equipment and Devices, Motors and Generators, Electrical Control Devices, Disconnecting Means, and Special Occupancies, Equipment and Conditions


PRE-APPROVAL: Applicants must obtain pre-approval from the state licensing board before testing.


APPLICATIONS: To apply, contact the Texas Department of Licensing at 512-463-6599. The license application and renewal fee is $25. Applications are processed in the order in which they are received. The wait time is typically no more than 2-3 weeks. The term of the license is one year.


RECIPROCITY: Texas has no reciprocal agreement for this license.


CONTINUING EDUCATION: The Texas Department of Licensing requires completion of 4 hours of approved continuing education during the term of the current license. The required hours must cover the National Electrical Code and Texas state electrician laws and rules. For late renewal, the continuing education courses must have been completed within the 1 year period immediately prior to the date of renewal.
