WEST VIRGINIA MULTIFAMILY CONTRACTOR SCOPE OF WORK COVERED: The Multifamily License is for any person who is engaged in the construction, repair or improvement of a multifamily residential structure or work incidental thereto. A multifamily residential structure means a structure containing two or more residential units. BUSINESS AND LAW: All types of contractors are required to pass both the business and law exam and a trade exam. PRE-APPROVAL: The first step in the licensing process is to pass all required exams. Once the exams are passed, then you submit an application to the State Licensing Board. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: There are no State mandated minimum experience requirements for this license. FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS: There are no State mandated financial requirements except for the Wage Bond which is described in greater detail under the heading of Bond / Insurance on this page. EXAM DETAILS: Prov administers the exam. It is an open book timed test with 75 questions and a 3-hour time limit. A score of 70% is required to pass the exam. The exam fee is $36.67 per exam. EXAM CONTENT: Plan Reading and Estimating Site Work Concrete Masonry Structural Steel Carpentry Roofing Doors, Windows and Stairs Interior Finishes Exterior Finishes Safety BOND / INSURANCE: All types of contractors are required to carry Workers Compensation Insurance and Unemployment Insurance. Applicants who have NOT been actively and actually engaged in construction work in West Virginia for the past 5 consecutive years must obtain a Wage Bond covering all employee salaries for four weeks at full production. Exceptions to the Wage Bond requirement are contractors that are only performing Residential work and those who have been actively engaged in construction work in West Virginia for the past 5 consecutive years. LICENSING FEE: There is an application fee of $90. PROCESSING TIME: Applications will be processed in the order in which they are received; approximate processing time is two weeks. RECIPROCITY: The State has no reciprocity agreements for this license. We do not currently offer a preparation class for this exam.
