State License Overview


  • Kentucky regulates Plumbing, HVAC, Fire Protection Systems and Boiler Contractors at the State Level.
  • Electrical Contractors are required to be Certified by the State and Licensed at the local level.
  • Pre-Approval is not required for HVAC and Plumbing (Master, Journeyman or Contractor) classifications before testing. Experience/Educational requirements exist.
  • Electrical applicants have Experience/Educational requirements, but do not need approval for testing. It is advisable to verify enough experience in the classification sought before testing.

Kentucky Business & Law


The Business Law exam is required in order to obtain the Electrical Contractors license. Every Electrical Contractor is required to employ a Master Electrician. So, if you are a self-employed Electrical Contractor without additional employees, you must also pass the Master Electrician exam.

Kentucky Electrical


The Master Electrician license is needed to supervise direct or take responsible charge of any Electrician who is engaged in the construction, alteration, or repair of any electrical wiring used for the purpose of furnishing heat, light or power. The Master may also conduct electrical work himself.
