Arizona (C-39 or CR-39 or R-39) Residential Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (Residential/Commercial)

This classification allows the licensee to install and repair comfort air conditioning systems, including refrigeration, evaporative cooling, ventilating, and heating with or without solar equipment. Installation and repair of machinery, units, accessories, refrigerator rooms, and insulated refrigerator spaces, and controls in refrigerators. If necessary, a new circuit may be added to the existing service panel or sub-panel. Excluded is the installation of a new service panel or sub-panel.


This scope includes all R-39R subclassifications.

Upon the effective date of these rules, no new applications for the R-39R Gas Refrigeration, Temperature Control Systems, Warm Air Heating, Evaporative Cooling and Ventilating, Evaporative Cooling and Ventilators, and Pre-Coolers license classifications will be accepted and no new R-39R licenses in these classifications will be issued.

Except for Code books, you can base your answers on later editions of reference books as they become available. For Code questions, the examinations will be based only on the edition of the Code book that is listed.

Some of the books are not permitted into the exam. This is a semi-open book test.

Applicants are required to have 4 years of verifiable experience and must pass the Arizona Business Management Exam in addition to the C-39 / CR-39 / R-39 exam.

The C-39, CR-39, R-39 Residential Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (Residential/Commercial) exam is 80 questions, multiple-choice with a 3-hour and 30 minute time limit.

The exam is semi open-book with 70% required to pass

Exam fees are $66.00 for one exam or $116.00 for two exams (Business Management and one trade)

Testing is through PSI and approval is required
