Colorado Journeyman Electrician Wireman


“Journeyman electrician” means a person having the necessary qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to wire for, install, and repair electrical apparatus and equipment for electric light, heat, and power, and for other purposes, in accordance with standard rules governing the work.


To perform electrical contracting in the State of Colorado, you must be a licensed Electrical Contractor registered with the State of Colorado:



  • Hold or employ a licensed master electrician to serve as the responsible individual for the company.



    • The master electrician and company owner (if separate individuals) must sign an Acknowledgment of Responsibility Form. The selected master electrician may be the responsible party for one company only.


  • You must submit evidence that you comply with Workers’ Compensation and Unemployment Compensation laws.

Required Books 

The examination is administered as an open-book exam. Use of the National Electrical Code book is allowed during the examination. A Code book will be provided for you to use.

  • All examination questions are consistent with the 2023 National Electrical Code book. The 2023 National Electrical Code book and Formula Page will be provided to you at the test center. You may not write, highlight, underline, and/or index on the references. You may not use any other materials.

Experience Requirements

8,000 hours of experience earned in no less than 4 years

4,000 hours of which must be in commercial/industrial work

 

Education Requirements

288 hours of classroom education required for applicants registered as an apprentice on or after 1/1/2011

Must be documented with a transcript or similar statement

Reciprocity: Colorado has entered into reciprocal licensing agreements with the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming for journeyman electrical licenses only.

Examination Information/Requirements:

Exam fees are $78.00 for exam and $73.00 for re-test

Journeyman Wireman has 90 scored Items: 240 minutes.  70% required to pass (63 correct)

There are up to 10 Non-Scored items with 30 minutes
