  • Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.
  • Applicants are not required to pass a separate Business Law exam because it is included in the Highway and Streets Contractor exam.
  • This license is required for work over $50,000.
  • Applicants must document at least 3 completed projects and 3 years of experience in the category for which they apply.

    The Board requires applicants to complete an official financial statement form provided by the Board, which requires current financial information, less than 1 year old. It must be completed by a CPA and show that applicant meets the Board’s $10,000 minimum net worth AND working capital requirement.

  • There is no mandated bond or insurance requirements at this time.

To apply, contact the state of Alabama at 1-334-269-9990. The application fee is $300. In addition there is a $100 fee to be donated to construction education. Applications must be received at least 30 days prior to regular board meeting dates in order to be reviewed at that meeting. The Board meets in January, April, July, and October of each year with additional special called meetings.

The State of Alabama has a reciprocity agreement with the following states for applicants that have held a license for 3 consecutive years: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

As of this time Alabama doesn’t require continuing education for the Highway and Streets Contractors license.

  • The fee for the exam is $106.
  • The Alabama Highway and Streets contractor Exam has 80 questions and a time limit of 220 minutes.
  • A 70% is required to pass.

    Topics on the exam include paving-asphalt, piles, safety, one-call, traffic-control, concrete, tunneling, excavation and grading, concrete paving, erosion and sedimentation control, metals including concrete reinforcement, railroad construction, and project management and estimating.
