West Virginia General Engineering Contractor

General Engineering Contractor means a person whose principal business is in connection with public or private works project, including, but not limited to, one or more of the following: Irrigation, drainage and water supply projects, including, electrical generation projects, swimming pools, flood control, harbors, railroads, highways, tunnels, airports and airways, sewers and sewage disposal systems, bridges, inland waterways, pipelines for transmission of petroleum and other liquid or gaseous substances, refineries, chemical plants and other industrial plants requiring a specialized engineering knowledge and skill, piers and foundations, and structures or work incidental thereto.

“Swimming pools” means a public swimming pool as defined by the Building Officials and Code Administrators B.O.C.A. National Building Code/1990, Article 6, Section 623.2.A.

Additional Services

  • The first step in the licensing process is to pass all required exams. Once the exams are passed, a completed application should be submitted to the State Licensing Board.
  • The Business and Law exam is also required.
  • There are no State mandated minimum experience requirements for this license.
  • There are no State mandated financial requirements except for the Wage Bond.
  • The License application fee is $150.00.

    All types of contractors are required to carry Workers Compensation Insurance and Unemployment Insurance. Applicants who have NOT been actively and actually engaged in construction work in West Virginia for the past 5 consecutive years must obtain a Wage Bond covering all employee salaries for four weeks at full production. Exceptions to the Wage Bond requirement are contractors that are only performing Residential work and those who have been actively engaged in construction work in West Virginia for the past 5 consecutive years.

West Virginia does not have a reciprocal agreement with any state for this license.

West Virginia does not currently require Continuing Education for the General Engineering license at this time.
  • PSI will be exam services for the state of West Virginia beginning November 1, 2022.

Business Law exam is required in addition to the Trade exam.

  • PSI administers the exam and a 70% is required to pass.
  • It is an open book timed test with 80 questions and a 3-hour time limit.
  • The exam fee is $47.50 per exam.
  • Out-of-state testing is available for additional fees

American Contractors does not offer a preparation class for the General Engineering Contractors exam at this time, but can prepare for the required Business Law exam.
