The references are listed below are permitted into the exam and used in our seminar. They may be tabbed and highlighted with permanent tabs prior to testing.
Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.
All Contractors are required by the state to pass this exam in addition to their trade exam in order to obtain a license. Some smaller, specialty licenses may be obtained by passing only the Business and Law contractor license exam. These smaller licenses do not have an exam of their own. Up to five (5) Specialty Licenses can be held under this license.
License Requirements
This contractor license can stand-alone as the only exam needed for a Specialty License. However, it is also required that all "Contractors" pass this exam in addition to their trade exam in order to obtain any Contractor license.
Reciprocity
Business and Law is not reciprocated with other states.
Continuing Education
Tennessee currently does not have Continuing Education Requirements for Contractors.
The Exam
This is an open-book timed test with 50 questions and a 2-hour and 20 minute time limit.
In order to pass you must answer 37 questions correct (73%).
The exam fee is $57. If the exam is failed three times, the applicant will have to interview with the board before retesting.
