Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work

Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

A person licensed under this chapter as a journeyman electrician is entitled to perform electrical installations under the direction of a master electrician or a type-s journeyman in connection with that specialty field, and may supervise an apprentice electrician or an electrician's helper employed by a master electrician under the master electrician's direction. In the case of an apprentice or helper, “supervise” means that the journeyman is physically present on the work site and is immediately available to direct and supervise that apprentice or helper.

License Requirements

Pre-Approval is required to sit for the exam.

Journeyman – * If Reciprocal check off from which state and be sure to include a certified letter from reciprocating state (New Hampshire or Maine ONLY), Photocopy of license is NOT acceptable form of proof.

* If you have completed the Vermont Apprenticeship Program (within the past 2 years) please include a copy of your completion certificate – affidavits not required for this submission.

* If neither of the above applies you must show proof of 12,000hrs of experience through signed affidavits from your previous employers.

* $115.00 3 year license fee.

Reciprocity

Reciprocity agreements exist with New Hampshire and Maine.

Continuing Education

Vermont equires 15 hours of Continuing Education each year for both Masters & Journeyman

The Exam

The exam is 90 questions, open-book with a 4-hr time limit.

Exam fees are $65 for Paper & Pencil testing & $100 for Computer based testing.

Topics include General Knowledge, Service & Servie Equipment, Feeders, Branch Circuits & Conductors, Wiring Methods & Materials, Equipment & Devices, Control Devices, Motors & Generators, Special Occupancies, Equipment & Conditions, Local Amendments.
