Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work

Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

Any and all legal entities engaged in the business of refrigeration contracting and servicing, installation and repair.

The use of mechanical or absorption equipment to control temperature, humidity, or both, in order to satisfy the intended use of a specific space, other than for human comfort.

License Requirements

Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.

An applicant for the refrigeration license must have held an apprentice registration for two or more calendar years; or has completed 3,000 hours of coursework or experience; or is a graduate of an approved refrigeration curriculum.

All applicants are required to obtain a $15,000 performance bond.

Passing the Business Law exam is required only if doing work over $50,000 per job.

Applications must be received 10 business days before the Board meeting date

Reciprocity

The state of Alabama may have reciprocity with Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee for Refrigeration, in addition to HAC. Please check with the board for specifications.

Continuing Education

All certified contractors shall be required to complete four (4) credit hours of continuing education every year.

The Exam

The Alabama Refrigeration Exam has 115 questions and a time limit of 4 hours.

Topics on the exam include General Knowledge 19, Piping 17, Systems & Sizing 18, Maintenance/Troubleshooting 17, Plan Reading 2, Electrical Applications for Refrigeration Systems 10, Business Organization 1, Risk Management 2, Project Management 2, Estimating 4, Safety and Environmental 2, Labor Laws 3, Payroll and Employment Taxes 4, Financial Management 4, Contracts 3, Lien Laws 2, and Licensing Laws 5

To schedule your exam, you must first obtain pre-approval from the board. Then, contact Prov at 866-720-7768.

How We Help You Prepare

American Contractors does not currently prepare for the Alabama Refrigeration exam. American Contractors does carry the approved reference materials for this exam. Please contact Customer Service for more information.
