Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work

Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

The Alaska Journeyman is authorized to install, maintain or repair electrical systems and can work on residential, commercial, or industrial propertires. The Residential electrician can only do residential work.

License Requirements

Steps to become an Electrician in Alaska:

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid drivers license and either a high school diploma or a GED. Must pass an Algebra 1 class or a Work Keys Placement test and then enroll in an Electrical Apprenticeship Program.

Complete 1,400hrs of classroom training & 4,000hrs of hands on experience.

Pass the Residential Electrician or Journeyman Electrician exam
Then apply for a Certiicate of Fitmess through the Alaska Dept. of Labor

Once you complete an Apprenticeship program then:

Have at least 8,000 hours of work experience

· 6,000 hours of commercial or industrial experience

· No more than 2,000 hours residential work experience

· Have at most, 1,000 hours of trade-related classroom training

Alaska issues certifications, not licenses, but the certifications are comparable to licenses in other states.

Reciprocity

The state of Alaska has reciprocal agreements for Electrical Journeyman with the following states: Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.

Continuing Education

Alaska Journeyman Electrical License Renewal Requirements Electrical Journeymen must obtain 16 hours of continuing education every two years for license renewal. At least 8 of these hours must cover the current edition of the NEC. The other 8 hours can be 'Industry Related' or additional code update hours.

The Exam

The exam is given by the Alaska Dept.of Labor and Workforce Development

The exam is open-book and takes 4-hours to complete. A 70% is required.

Exam subjects include Gounding & Bonding, Services, Feeders & Branch Circuits, Raceways & Enclosures, Conductors & Cables, Special Occupancies, Electrical Power, Motors, Low Voltage, Alarms, Photovoltaics, Safety and Alaska Statutes & Regulations.
