Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.
A Master Sign Electrician is one who, on behalf of an electrical sign contractor, installs, maintains, extends, connects or reconnects an electrical wiring system and its appurtenances, apparatus or equipment used in connection with signs, outline lighting, awnings, signals, light emitting diodes, and the repair of existing outdoor electrical discharge lighting, including parking lot pole lighting. Also includes the installation of an electrical service integral to an isolated sign and/or outline lighting installation.
License Requirements
- Pre-approval from the state is not required to sit for the exam.
- 12,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master or master sign electrician;
Passing score on the master sign electrician examination.
- There are no state minimum financial requirements at this time.
- Applicants with any criminal offense conviction (felony or misdemeanor) must complete a criminal history questionnaire.
Reciprocity
Texas does not have a reciprocal agreement for this license.
Continuing Education
The Texas Department of Licensing requires completion of 4 hours of approved continuing education during the term of the current license. The required hours must cover the National Electrical Code and Texas state electrician laws and rules. For late renewal, the continuing education courses must have been completed within the 1 year period immediately prior to the date of renewal.
The Exam
The exam is administered by PSI. It is an open-book timed test with 100 questions and a 5-hour time limit.A score of at least 75% is required to pass the exam.
The exam fee is $63.

The license application and renewal fee is $50.
Applications are processed in the order in which they are received. The wait time is typically no more than 2-3 weeks.
The term of the license is one year.
