Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

The Alabama Commercial Swimming Pool Contractor license covers the construction, repair, renovation and incidental thereto of commercial swimming pools.

License Requirements

Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.
Please note that the Alabama Business and Law exam is also required to be passed to obtain your contractor’s license.
This license is required for work over $5,000.
Applicants must document at least 3 completed projects in the past 3 years in the category for which they apply.

The Board requires applicants to complete an official financial statement form provided by the Board which requires current financial information, less than 1 year old. It must be completed by a CPA and show that applicants meet the Board’s $10,000 minimum net worth AND working capital requirement. Maximum bid limits will be set depending on financial status.

There is no mandated bond or insurance requirements at this time.

Reciprocity

General contractor reciprocity agreements exist with Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Tennessee. However, you must have held the same classification of license in these states for at least 3 years to qualify for reciprocity.

Continuing Education

As of this time, there is no continuing education requirements for the Alabama Commercial Swimming Pool Contractor license.

The Exam

The fee for the exam is $192.00
The Alabama Commercial Swimming Pool Exam has 50 questions and a time limit of 150 minutes.
A 70% is required to pass. (35 correct)
Topics on the exam include estimating and plan reading, site-work and excavating, forming and reinforcing, concrete, shotcrete, and pool equipment (including ADA, no plumbing or electric).

To apply, contact the state of Alabama at 1-334-272-5030. The application fee is $300. The application must be submitted to the board at least 30 days before the next board meeting, which are normally held in January, April, July, and October.
