Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work

Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

This license covers masonry work common to the construction industry including restoration.

License Requirements

Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.
Please note that the Alabama Business and Law exam is also requiredto be passed to obtain your contractor’s license.
This license is required for work over $50,000.
Applicants must document at least 3 completed projects in the past 3 years in the category for which they apply.
The Board requires applicants to complete an official financial statement form provided by the Board which requires current financial information, less than 1 year old. It must be completed by a CPA and show that applicants meet the Board’s $10,000 minimum net worth AND working capital requirement. Maximum bid limits will be set depending on financial status.
There is no state mandated bond or insurance requirements for this license at this time.

Reciprocity

Alabama has reciprocity agreements with Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee for applicants that have held a license for 3 consecutive years.

Continuing Education

As of this time Alabama doesn’t require continuing education for the Masonry Contractor license.

The Exam

The fee for the exam is $96.
The Alabama Masonry Exam has 60 questions and a time limit of 180 minutes.
A score of 70% is required to pass. (42 correct)
Topics covered on the exam are estimating and plan reading, unit masonry, mortar and grout, accessories, stone, tools, restoration and cleaning, and safety.
To schedule your exam, you must first obtain pre-approval from the board. Then, contact PSI at 1-800-733-9267.

How We Help You Prepare

We do not offer a preparation class for the Alabama Masonry license at this time, however, we do carry the reference materials required to prepare for this exam. Currently we offer a seminar to prepare you for the required Business Law Exam. Additional trade exam seminars will be available in the future, please contact us for additional information, 1-800-992-1910.

To apply, contact the state of Alabama at 1-334-272-5030. The licensing fee is $300. In addition there is a $100 fee to be donated to construction education. Applications must be received at least 30 days prior to regular board meeting dates in order to be reviewed at that meeting. The Board meets in January, April, July, and October of each year with additional special called meetings.
