Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work

Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

A Master Gas Fitter is any person who engages in or proposes to engage in the business of contracting to do, or of superintending the installation, maintenance, or repair of gas systems or gas work, either or both.

License Requirements

Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.
There is no Business and Law exam required to obtain this license. Only a trade exam must be taken.
Applicants must have 1 year of experience as a licensed Journeyman and hold a current Journeyman Certificate.
Masters will be required to obtain a $2,000 surety bond at the local level in the county where work is being done.

Reciprocity

Alabama has no reciprocity agreements for this license. Applicants with an active license in another state may use that license to qualify to take the exam; otherwise all applicants must start at the Apprentice level.

Continuing Education

As of this time Alabama doesn’t require continuing education for the Master Gas Fitter license.

The Exam

The fee for the exam is $160.
The Alabama Master Gas Fitter Exam has 76 questions and a time limit of 3 hours.
Topics on the exam are based on general knowledge and the information contained in the 2015 edition of the International Fuel Gas Code.
To schedule your exam must first gain pre-approval. PSI gives the exam. A letter containing additional exam information will be sent to you upon approval. Exams are scheduled approximately once every quarter.

We do not currently offer a preparation class for the Alabama Master Gas Fitter license at this time. For additional information please call 1-800-992-1910.

To apply, contact the state of Alabama at 205-945-4857. The licensing fee is $125. All licenses expire on December 31st of the year issued. Regardless of when applications are submitted, approval notices will be mailed approximately 2 weeks before the next scheduled exam.
