Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work

Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

Installation, alteration, and repair of transmission lines on public right-of-ways, including erection of poles, guying systems, tower line erection, street lighting of all voltages, and all underground systems including ducts for signal, communication, and similar installations. Installing transformers, circuit breakers, capacitors, primary metering devices and other related equipment of all electrical construction is included. All systems of less than 600 volts on or inside a building are excluded.

License Requirements

The Arizona Business Management exam is required.

All Contractors are required to obtain bonds. The amount is based on the license classification and the yearly work volume. For the lowest priced bonds in Arizona call 602-678-1200

Applicants are required to have 4 years of verifiable experience.

Reciprocity

Rather than reciprocal agreements with other states, Arizona waives the trade exam for any applicant who has been the qualifying party within the last 5 years for a license in good standing in a classification the Registrar deems equivalelnt in another state, and passed a comaprable trade exam to obtain that license.

Continuing Education

Arizona does not currently have Continuing Education requirements

The Exam

The Business Management exam is also required.

The A-17 exam is 90 questions, multiple-choice with a 225 minute time limit.

The exam is semi open-book with 70% required to pass

Exam fees are $66.00 for one exam or $116.00 for two exams (Business Management and one trade)

Testing is through PSI and approval is required
