Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work

Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

The Business Law exam is required for any job in excess of $20,000.00 by a Residential Contractor, General Contractor and those holding trade licenses.

License Requirements

The Business Law exam is required for any job over $20,000.00 by the Residential Contractor, General Contractor and those holding trade licenses.
THIS EXAM IS REQUIRED FOR BOTH RESIDENTIAL OR COMMERCIAL CONTRACTING.
Pre-Approval is required. Applicants must submit a completed application to the board.
The application requires references, experience documentation, bonding information and an audited financial statement.
The Residential Contractor is required to have four years of experience.
The General Contractor must have five years of experience.
A $10,000 bond is required.

Reciprocity

NASCLA Accredited license is accepted in the following states:

Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia & the Virgin Islands.

Additionally, West Virginia will accept the NASCLA exam scores for the West Virginia General Contractor, provided the NASCLA exam was passed after 11/1/2013.

Nevada is also accepting the NASCLA exam scores if the exam was passed after 12/1/2013. This is for the same classification.

As of 8/1/2017, Arizona began accepting this examination in lieu trade examinations for the B-1 and B-2 General Commercial Contracting Classifications. As of 11/21/2017 Arizona also began administering the NASCLA exam.

As of 3/1/2019, Florida is accepting the NASCLA exam. Scores from the NASCLA exam are now acceptable for the Residential, Building, or General Contractor classifications. Applicants using the NASCLA exam will still be required to pass the Florida Business and Finance exams and meet all other application requirements.

Continuing Education

There are currently NO Continuing Education requirements for the Arkansas Business and Law license.

The Exam

The Business and Law exam fee is $75.00.
The Business and Law exam is administered by Thomson Prometric.
It is an open book test with a 2-hour time limit and 50 questions.
Exam topics include: Rules and Regulations, OSHA recordkeeping, Tax Laws, Contract Management, Financial Management, Project Management, Insurance and bonding, Estimating and bidding, Business organization, licensing, and Personnel regulations.
