Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work

Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

A Master Plumber is a person who performs or contracts to perform plumbing services. Class 1 is restricted to plumbing work involving single-family dwellings, one-level dwellings designed for no more than 2 families and commercial structures not exceeding 10,000 sq. feet. Class 2 license has no restrictions as to the type of plumbing work allowed.

License Requirements

Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.

Please note that the Georgia Business and Law exam is NOT required to obtain your Georgia Journeyman Plumbers license.
There are no state mandated minimum financial requirements for this license at this time.
There are two levels of Master Plumber / Contractor available, they are; Class 1 – Restricted and Class 2 – Unrestricted.
All applicants must submit 3 references.
Class 1 – 5-years experience with a minimum of 2-years as primary experience.
Class 2 - 5-years experience with a minimum of 2-years as primary experience. And, must include experience with commercial or industrial plumbing.
Primary Experience shall mean working experience gained through the direct installation of plumbing systems, which would include; but not be limited to:

(a) Installation of plumbing pipes and fixtures by a plumbing contractor, master plumber, Journeyman plumber, plumbing foreman, plumbing superintendent, a military plumber with a rank of at least a 3rd class petty officer or E-4 noncommissioned officer; </

Reciprocity

Georgia currently does not have reciprocal agreements with any state for Plumbing classifications.

Continuing Education

To qualify for renewal, conditioned air contractors, electrical contractors, and plumbers must have completed continuing education.

Persons holding a conditioned air contractor license, electrical contractor license, or plumber license must complete at least 4 hours per year of instruction related to their profession. Courses must be conducted by a college, vocational-technical school, or trade association. Conditioned air and electrical contractors may also complete courses conducted by a utility or equipment manufacturer.

The Exam

The testing company is AMP.
The exam is offered six times per year, is closed book, with weighted, multiple-choice questions and a 7-hour time limit.
The Class 1 – Restricted Exam has 120 questions.
The Class 2 – Unrestricted Exam has 140 questions.
It is a two-part test with Business and Law type questions and technical questions.
It is all multiple-choice. A score of 70% is required to pass the exam. The exam fee is $143.

If you should fail the exam twice, you must complete a state approved training course before testing again.
Veterans may have 5 to 10 points added to their exam scores by submitting documentation that they served a minimum of one year in active duty status and must have served during a period of conflict or war for a minimum of 90 days. Or, discharged for an injury or illness that occurred in the line of duty and the disability is officially rated.
