Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

The MASTER ELECTRICIAN license is needed to supervise direct or take responsible charge of any Electrician who is engaged in the construction, alteration, or repair of any electrical wiring used for the purpose of furnishing heat, light or power. The Master may also conduct electrical work himself.

License Requirements

THE FOLLOWING ARE EXEMPT AND DO NOT NEED A LICENSE TO DO ELECTRICAL WORK: *Electrical Utilities and their employees *Maintenance workers doing routine maintenance *Homeowners or farmers working on their own property *Retailers installing appliances *Workers in coal mines or coal preparation plants *Workers installing or repairing low-voltage telecommunications systems *Manufacturers installing medical equipment As of July 15, 2004 the state of Kentucky requires individuals conducting electrical work or electrical contracting to obtain a state license. There are three types of statewide electrical licenses available at this time.

EXPERIENCE:Applicants must have 6 years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade AND a training course in electrical work OR an additional 2 years of verifiable experience Applicants must pass an exam to obtain this statewide Master Electrician license.

Reciprocity

Kentucky will consider reciprocity on an individual basis.

Applicants have the option to take the Master Electrician's (ME) or Electrician's (EE) exam through NASCLA. Kentucky will accept NASCLA Electrical exam score passed within the last 3 years.

Continuing Education

Master Electricians must complete 6 hours of Continuing Education each year in order to renewal their license.

The Exam

The testing company is ICC. The exam is an open-book test containing 100 questions and a 5 hour time limit. A 70% is required to pass. The cost of the exam is $100

EXAM SUBJECT AREAS: Service Transformers & Equipment, Wiring Methods & Installation, Cabinets, Panelboards, Switchboards, Boxes & Conduit Bodies, Conductors, Control Devices, Motors & Generators, Utilization Equipment & Devices, Special Occupancies & Uses, Miscellaneous, Plan Reading & Analysis

License fee: $100 A passport-sized photo (1"x1.5") must be included Permanent license cards are typically mailed out within 7-10 business days of receipt of your application and ALL required documentation. Application fees are NOT refundable

American Contractors offers a 1.5 day seminar to prepare individuals for the Kentucky Master Electrician exam proctored by ICC. Please call to register! 800-992-1910

Applications must be completed and sent to the Board with experience documentation, passing exam scores, a current photo and $100 fee.

Once processed and approved, your license will be mailed in 3 to 5 business days. Renewal fee is $100.
