Required Books 

 The references listed below are permitted to be taken into the examination. These references may be tabbed (with permanent index tabs) and highlighted. They are available for purchase from our online contractor’s bookstore or by calling our office at 1-800-992-1910.

The Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Technology edition allowed into the exam is the 8th or 9th edition, however our course is based on the 9th edition.

There are no state mandated financial requirements for this license at this time.

The state requires that all HVAC Contractors have general liability insurance of at least $500,000.

The application fee is $250.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and document 2 years of experience. Credit is given only for experience occurring after January 1, 1990 and it must be experience under the supervision of a licensed contractor. Trade education may be substituted for a maximum of one year of experience.

Applications will be processed within 60 days of the date received.

The first step in the licensing process is to pass the required exams. Upon passing the exams, applicants must submit a completed application with fees to the state licensing board.

Currently, the only state with which the Commonwealth of Kentucky has a reciprocal agreement is Ohio. If you possess a valid Ohio Mechanical Contractor license, you may be eligible to reciprocate with Kentucky to obtain a Kentucky Master and Journeyman HVAC license without meeting certain requirements. License holders must take 6 hours of Continuing Education in order to renew their license.
The testing company is ICC. It is an open-book, timed test with 100 questions and a 4-hour time limit. The exam fee is $100.  A specific grade will not be given on the exam, only a pass or fail statement.
