Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.
The classification of Heavy Construction includes the work of the following sub-classifications: Clearing, grubbing and snagging; dams, reservoirs and flood control work other than levees; dredging; electrical transmission lines; fencing; foundations and pile driving; industrial piping; industrial plants; industrial ventilation; landscaping, grading and beautification; oil field construction; oil refineries; railroads; transmission pipeline construction; tunnels; wharves, docks, harbor improvements and terminals. All persons who desire to become licensed as a heavy construction contractor shall make application to the board on a form adopted by the board and shall state the classification of work the applicant desires to perform from a list of major classifications.
License Requirements
An application form must be submitted to the board before testing.
There are no specific experience requirements in Louisiana.
Completion of the Louisiana Business Law course is required for licensure
A financial statement showing a net worth of at least $50,000 (within 12 months of filing date) prepared by a CPA, Accountant or Bookkeeper, for those wishing to perform work on a construction undertaking where the entire cost of the project is $50,000.00 or more.
Reciprocity
The Board has formal written reciprocal agreements with the States of Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Utah. The Business and Law examination cannot be waived for out-of-state contractors. However, reciprocity is not automatic, applications will be considered individually.
Louisiana states that if an individual holds a license in any other state for a classification that required a trade exam to be passed, LA will accept that exam for reciprocity for whatever classification LSLBC deems to be equivalent.
Continuing Education

Effective August 5, 2025, all trade examinations will transition to PSI Services LLC (PSI).
Exam fees are $140.00 per exam. The Louisiana Heavy Construction exam is open-book, 30 multiple choice questions,requires 70% to pass and has a 1-hour and 15 min time limit.
Exam Content: Sitework, Erosion & Sedimentation Control, Concrete & Metal Reinforcement, Pipes, & Pre-cast & Pre-Stressed Concrete Erecting.
