Nevada Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Contractor (C-21)

The construction, erection and installation of devices, machinery and units for the control of air temperatures below 50F in refrigerators, refrigerated rooms and insulated spaces, and installation of any related insulation, ducts, blowers, registers, controls over humidity and thermostatic controls, lines for supplying natural gas from the unit to the point of connection in the existing line for natural gas at the meter or at any point thereafter, electrical service from the unit’s device to protect against excessive current to the main electrical panel, but not the installation of other gas or electric services for the devices, machinery or units, the installation, repair, service and maintenance of equipment, devices, machinery, units and related ductwork which use evaporation, refrigeration, boilers or combustion for the control of air temperatures in structures where people live, work or assemble or animals are kept, the selection, cutting, shaping, fabrication and installation of sheet metal in such forms as cornices, flashings, gutters, leaders, downspouts for rainwater, pans, kitchen equipment, ducts, louvres, patented chimneys and metal flues, the repair and replacement of any parts of existing units or systems of air-conditioning and refrigeration, including the compressors, motors, relays, coils, heat exchangers and other appurtenances and equipment, but not the replacement of complete condenser assemblies on remote systems, air handlers or any work that may alter the design of an existing system, the installation of the collectors, piping, storage and other equipment used in the conversion of solar energy to energy used for the control of air temperatures, the installation of the chiller, piping,pumps,storage tanks, coils, cooling tower and other equipment used in the production and use of chilled water for the control of temperatures, the fabrication, installation, repair and removal of pipes, pumps, valves and other equipment used in the transfer of hot water for the control of temperatures.

Required Books 

The reference materials listed were used to create the exam and are needed to prepare for the exam. However, only the Uniform Mechanical Code and the NFPA 54 are allowed into the exam.  Applicants should be familiar with the content from all reference materials. Questions may also be based on trade knowledge and general industry practices.

Pre Approval is required to sit for the exam. Applicants must submit an application to the licensing board to gain approval.

Business Management Survey exam is required.

All applicants must submit current financial statements to the state licensing board. Monetary limits are set based on financial standing. If seeking a financial limit less than $1,000,000 the statement must be compiled, reviewed or audited by a CPA. When seeking a monetary limit of $1,000,000 or more, the financial statement must be reviewed and audited by a CPA. 

Applicants must have at least 4 years experience within the last 10 years in the designation applying for.

The license belongs to the business, not the qualifying party.

The fee to apply is $300. If your license is approved the license fee is $600 for a 2-year license.

A license is issued for 2-years and must be renewed biennially.

Contractors engaged in any type of residential work must participate in the Residential Recovery Fund. The fee is based on the monetary limit placed on the license.

The state of Nevada has a reciprocity agreement with California, Arizona, and Utah. There is no reciprocity for the plumbing and electrical trades. Applicants must have at least 7 years of experience and meet all licensing requirements.
Nevada currently does not require Continuing Education for this classification. Please check with the Board for more information.

PSI Licensure Certification administers the exam. It is an open-book, timed test with 85 questions and a 3-hour time limit. A score of at least 70% (60 correct) is required to pass the exam. The exam fee is $95 for a single exam and $140 for one trade exam plus the Contractor Management Survey Exam.

If the test is failed three times the applicant must begin the application process over and reapply directly to the Nevada State Contractors’ Board.
