Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work

Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

(Plumbing) Technician: Potable water and drain/waste/vent piping systems. Must be a sub-licensee of a licensed plumbing contractor. This is not a contracting license.

License Requirements

Pre-approval from the state is required to sit for the examination.
To be eligible to take the Plumbing Technician examination, am applicant must have 18 months (3,000 hrs) on-site fill-time experience on the installation, maintenance, service, or repair of plumbing systems related to the category for which the license is sought, whether or not license was required for the work performed. Up to one-half (1,500 hours) (34 quarter hours or 23 semester hours) of the experience requirement may be in academic or technical training directly related to the field of endeavor for which the examination is requested.
There are no State mandated minimum financial, bonding, or insurance requirements for this license at this time.

Reciprocity

North Carolina does not have reciprocity for this license.

Continuing Education

North Carolina requires 6 hours of approved continuing education every year as a condition of license renewal. Continuing education hours must be completed prior to your license expiration each year. 4 hours of continuing education must be on the current code related to your license and 2 hours must be on a subject related to plumbing.

The Exam

The fee for the exam is $100 ($25 application fee and $75 for the exam).
The Plumbing Class 1 exam has 150 questions with a time limit of 4 hours.
The exam is designed to test the applicant’s knowledge concerning the analysis of plans and specifications, estimating costs, fundamentals of installation and design, codes, fire hazards, and related subjects as they pertain to heating.
An applicant has 30 days to take the exam once approval has been given.

The fee for the application is $25 and the licensing fee for initial license and for renewal is $125.Applications will be processed in 2 to 4 weeks from the time they are received.

All licenses expire on the last day of December in each year following their issuance or renewal.
