North Carolina Railroad Construction

The Railroad classification covers the building, construction, and repair of railroad lines including clearing and filling rights-of-way, shaping, compacting, setting and stabilizing road beds, setting ties, tie plate rails, rail connectors, frogs, switch plates, switches, signal markers, retaining walls, dikes, fences and gates, and construction and repair of tool sheds and platforms.

Required Books

The books listed under “Reference Materials” on this page are used to create the exam and are recommended for study. However, only the following books are allowed into the exam room while testing. They are: NC OSHA for the Construction Industry, 49CFR Part 213-Track Safety Standards; Part 214-Railroad Workplace Safety; Part 236-Rules, Standards, and Instructions Governing the Installation, Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair of Signal and Train Control Systems, Devices and Appliances  These references may be tabbed (with permanent index tabs) and highlighted. They are available for purchase from our online contractor’s bookstore or by calling our office at 1-800-992-1910.

**The book Field Handbook for Concrete Railway Structures is out of print and no longer available, however all of the information contained in this book can be found in the Manual for Railway Engineering book, which is also required for this exam.
