Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work
Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.
Electrical Contractors must have the knowledge and skill to install, alter, add or change any electrical wires, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduit or any part thereof that generates, transmits, transforms or utilizes electrical energy in any form for light, heat, power or communication.
Individuals wishing to become Electrical Contractors must be qualified to sit for the exam by being at least 18 years of age and a US citizen, having 5 years documentable experience in the classification desired or have been an engineer with 3 years of business experience in the construction industry, not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or of any felony and Pass the applicable examinations.
License Requirements
This license requires pre-approval from the Ohio Construction Industry’s Examining Board. Candidates wishing to obtain a license must go through the qualification process.
All applications must have a BCI background check to sit for the state exam. Applicants are required to pass the Business and Law Exam in addition to the Electrical Exam in order to obtain this license.
To qualify you must:
1) Be at least 18 years of age;
2) Be a US citizen;
3) Have 5 years documentable experience in the classification desired or have been an engineer with 3 years of business experience in the construction industry;
4) Not have been convicted of or pled guilty to a disqualifying offense as defined in Ohio S.B. 337;
5) Pass the applicable examinations;
6) Pay the applicable fees.
To qualify to sit for the exam applicants must:
1) Complete the exam application;
2) Verify employment dates with start and end month day and year to verify 5 years experience of working in that trade with no breaks in that 5-year history immediately prior to completing the application. Be specific in nature of duties & be sure to attach proof of being in the trade. (Examples would be local licenses held, permits obtained, signed contracts, invoices, or letter of recommendation.
Reciprocity
Limited reciprocity is available with West Virginia and North Carolina for some classifications. Contact the Ohio Board for more information.Continuing Education

The exam is administered by PSI.
Pre-Approval is required.
It is an open-book timed test with 100 questions and a 4-hour time limit.
A score of at lest 70% is required to pass. The exam fee is $69.00 for each exam.
The Business Law exam must be passed in order to obtain a license. NOTE: If an individual wants to obtain more than one trade license, they must retake and pass the Business and Law Exam for each trade added to their license.
