Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work
Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.
A Tradesman Limited Plumber is someone who constructs and installs plumbing for one-family and two-family dwellings.
License Requirements
The first step in the licensing process is to submit an application to the licensing board to obtain approval to test.
Applicants must have a current Texas Plumber’s Apprentice registration. They must have at least 4,000 hours of experience working under the direct supervision of a licensed plumber and general supervision of a Master Plumber OR have a valid Journeyman or Master Plumber license from another state and at least 4,000 hours of experience working under the general supervision of a Master Plumber.
Reciprocity
The state of Texas considers reciprocity on an individual basis. If licensed under another state, applicant must submit a letter on official letterhead from that state licensing authority stating that the individual has a valid Journeyman or Master Plumbing License from that state, including how long the license has been held and whether or not the license is renewable. Proof of experience must be submitted to the Board. Applicants are required to have same amount of experience as required by in-state applicants.Continuing Education
The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners requires completion of 6 hours of approved continuing education during the term of the current license for renewal each year. 3 of the 6 hours must cover the subjects of health protection, energy conservation and water conservation. The Exam
The Texas State Plumbing Board administers the exam.
It is a closed book and contains 85 multiple-choice questions. The exam is a three-part test. The first part is a written portion and the second part covers sanitary waste and vent installation and the third part is a mechanical “Hands On” shop-work portion.
The exam fee is $40.00. If the exam is failed once, candidates must wait a 30-day training period before retesting. A 60 day waiting period applies if failed twice and 90 days if failed 3 or more times.
