SCOPE OF WORK: Maintenance Electricians work under the general supervision of a Master Electrician, on behalf of an electrical contractor, to replace or repair existing electrical appurtenances, apparatus, equipment, machinery or controls used in connection with the use of electrical energy in, on, outside or attached to a building, residence, structure, property or premises.

License Requirements

There are no state minimum financial requirements at this time.

Applicants with any criminal offense conviction (felony or misdemeanor) must complete a criminal history questionnaire.

Applicants must obtain pre-approval from the state licensing board before testing.

QUALIFICATIONS: 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician or a maintenance electrician; Passing score on the maintenance electrician examination.

Reciprocity

Texas has no reciprocal agreement for this license.

Continuing Education

The Texas Department of Licensing requires completion of 4 hours of approved continuing education during the term of the current license. The required hours must cover the National Electrical Code and Texas state electrician laws and rules. For late renewal, the continuing education courses must have been completed within the 1 year period immediately prior to the date of renewal.

The Exam

The test is administered by PSI. It is an open-book timed test with 60 questions and a 2-hour time limit. A score of at least 75% is required to pass the exam. The exam fee is $63.

Topics covered on the exam are Electrical Services, Service Equipment, Separately Derived Systems, Definitions, Calculations, Theory and Plans, Electrical Feeders, Branch Circuits, Calculations and Conductors, Electrical Wiring Methods, and Electrical Materials, Electrical Equipment and Devices, Motors and Generators, Electrical Control Devices, Disconnecting Means, and Special Occupancies, Equipment and Conditions
