Confirm This Is the Right License for Your Work

Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.

A Journeyman may perform all types of electrical work EXCEPT design of electrical systems (commercial and industrial design).

Journeymen are qualified to perform work in all sub-classified specialty areas such as HVAC, Elevator, Electric Sign and so forth. Each Journeyman may supervise up to 3 licensed Apprentice Electricians.

Journeyman may also pull permits in many areas. (Check with your local Inspectors Office)

License Requirements

Applicants must submit an application to the State Fire Marshal’s Office to verify experience and gain approval to take the exam.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Applicants must have at least one of the following:

1 year/2000 hours of actual electrical work in wiring for Light, Heat and Power of Residential and Commercial buildings OR
Completion of US Dept of Labor registered electrical apprenticeship program (must show certificate) OR
Completion of an electrical vocational education program of at least 1080 hours (must show certificate)
All electrical work shall consist of above ground structural wiring in accordance with the National Electrical Code
There are no state mandated financial requirements for this license.

Reciprocity

West Virginia has a reciprocity agreement with the state of Virginia for the Journeyman license, though certain restrictions apply.

Continuing Education

West Virginia does not currently require Continuing Education for Electricians.

The Exam

The exam is given by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
There are several preset dates and locations for these exams throughout the year.
The exam is 50 multiple-choice questions and 5 electrical calculations.
Multiple choice questions are worth 1.5 points and calculations are 5 points each.
There is a 4-hour time limit for the test.
The exam fee is $25.
80% is required to pass

The licensing fee is $50 with a yearly renewal at the same cost. Applications are processed as soon as they are received.

Applicants should receive an approval letter within 10 to 15 days.
