Every state licensing board defines the exact project types, sizes, and trades that fall under each contractor classification. Review the scope below to make sure this license matches the work you actually do — then enroll in the seminar that prepares you for that exam the first time.
The Multifamily License is for any person who is engaged in the construction, repair or improvement of a multifamily residential structure or work incidental thereto. A multifamily residential structure means a structure containing two or more residential units.
License Requirements
The first step in the licensing process is to pass all required exams. Once the exams are passed, a completed application should be submitted to the State Licensing Board.
The Business and Law exam is required in addition to the trade exam.
There are no State mandated minimum experience requirements for this license.
There are no State mandated financial requirements except for the Wage Bond.
The License application fee is $90.00.
All types of contractors are required to carry Workers Compensation Insurance and Unemployment Insurance. Applicants who have NOT been actively and actually engaged in construction work in West Virginia for the past 5 consecutive years must obtain a Wage Bond covering all employee salaries for four weeks at full production. Exceptions to the Wage Bond requirement are contractors that are only performing Residential work and those who have been actively engaged in construction work in West Virginia for the past 5 consecutive years.Reciprocity
West Virginia does not currently have reciprocity for the Multifamily Contractor at this time.
Continuing Education
West Virginia does not currently require Continuing Education for the Multifamily Contractor at this time.
The Exam
Prov will be administering all exam services for the state of West Virginia beginning September 1, 2024.
The Multifamily exam is an open book timed test with 75 questions and a 3-hour time limit.
The Business Law exam is also required.
A score of 70% is required to pass the exam. The exam fee is $59.95 per exam.

American Contractors Exam Services currently doesn not offer a seminar to prepare you for the Multifamily Contractor license exam. We do offer the General Building Contractor Seminar., which utilizes many of t he books. We also prepare for the required Business Law exam.
